This year will mark our third year attending HopScotch- a beer and scotch festival at Fremont Studios in Seattle. Although I do not go for the scotch (or tequila), the vibe is always great, the beers are flowing and you are guaranteed to have a good time. What more could you ask for?

Hop Scotch Spring Beer & Scotch Festival is a premier beer, Scotch, wine and spirit tasting experience benefiting the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF). On April 1 and 2, Fremont Studios transforms into a swanky beverage tasting lounge featuring over 80 libations to swirl, sniff and sip.
Entrance includes tokens to sample beer and wine. For an expanded tasting experience, optional spirit samplers of Scotch or tequila may be purchased as well as an hour-long Scotch Seminar with the Master of Whisky. Develop your sense of taste at the stylish indoor setting of Fremont Studios on April 1st and 2nd, 2011 at Hop Scotch Spring Beer and Scotch Festival.
Hop Scotch is a benefit for the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF). SIFF’s mission is to create experiences that bring people together to discover extraordinary films from around the world. It is through the art of cinema that we foster a community that is more informed, awake and alive.

1554 Enlightened Black Lager uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brew master, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Made with ginger but still has his place in his heart for Mary Ann. Redhook Wit is a twist on the traditional Belgian brew. A balanced mixture of spices, orange peel, coriander and ginger give this wheat beer a smooth yet distinct flavor. It is brewed with Kolsch yeast, and we decided to steep the spices in the whirlpool for 15 mins just prior to cooling and fermentation; similar to a finishing hop addition. As with cooking, this method keeps the spice flavors and aromas intact, and soft/subtle.
The Boston Beer Company began in 1984 with a generations-old family recipe that Founder and Brewer Jim Koch uncovered in his father’s attic. After bringing the recipe to life in his kitchen, Jim brought it to bars with the belief that drinkers would appreciate a complex, full-flavored beer, brewed fresh in America. Seattle’s Fremont Brewing announced today that they have tested their first run of cans. Guess what? The beer was delicious.
This has been interesting news for almost 1 year now. Back in April 2010, we ran an article about Fremont’s purchase of a used canning line. At the time of the article, we knew they weren’t ready but hoped that something would get cracking by Summer 2010. But Fremont went the appropriate route and focused on developing their beers and creating a public image. Now, the small brewer is one of the most recognizable faces in Seattle beer.
With some progress made, the team at Fremont has decided to give the canning line a go. They announced on Twitter today that the first batch of Interurban IPA had been test canned and that samples came back tasting great. While there is no official release date in the works, you might expect to begin seeing Interurban IPA and perhaps Universale Pale, in the near future.
A good canned IPA is just what the market needs. 21st Amendment’s Brew Free or Die IPA is just about the only readily available IPA in a can on the market. Maui Brewing’s Big Swell and 7 Seas Ballz Deep Double IPA are both out there, but harder to find.
In other news, I have been meaning to post the new Fremont Brewing promo video for some time now (Sorry Matt). The team put together a few excellent videos that accurately depicts their collective spirit and attention to details. One is below, but check the site for more.

It has been awhile since I had the time and energy to consistently contribute to bb.com. I am back. For the past three weeks, my day job has taken priority. As a fundraiser for Plymouth Housing Group, a local non-profit, I have been working overtime to get us ready for our annual gala, Seattle Dances!
Seattle Dances! is not your oridinary auction/fundraiser. Yes, we do have an auction but we also provide the guests with a Dancing with the Stars inspired entertainment. This past Saturday night, 8 local, Seattle “celebrities” partnered with professional dance instructors from Century Ball Room in Capital Hill to compete for votes and the Judge’s Choice Award. The dancers did an amazing job raising money for Plymouth Housing Group and promoting our mission to end homelessness.
One of the available auction items was a brewery tour of Seattle. 6 lucky individuals will enjoy a tour of three breweries located in Fremont/Ballard– NW Peaks Brewing Co., Fremont Brewing Co., and Maritime Brewing Co. All three breweries were more than willing to donate their time and beer to this worthy cause.
NW Peaks Brewing Co. is the new kid on the block and is considered a nano- brewery. Owner and brewer, Kevin Kline works a 9-5 job then tends to his new and growing brewery. Located in Ballard, NW Peaks operates out of a small space and is open for limited hours. However, this brewery represents the beginning of something great as a new addition to the local craft beer scene.
Kevin began a membership program, accepts inquiries to assist him in brewing and has the mentality of someone who wants to share his beer with the world. Just stop by and you’ll know exactly what I mean. Go to NW Peaks’ website for hours and other information (such as what beer is pouring, most importantly).
Fremont Brewing Co. is quickly becoming a very popular brewery in Seattle with quality brews and a space that beckons local visitors. I love breweries who have wide open tasting rooms with the brewing equipment glistening in the backdrop. There is something very grassroots about this set-up. Fremont is just that.
Many words come to mind when I think of this brewery–community, environment, innovation and sustainability. I love that Fremont dry hops their IPA with various hops and ingredients, such as grapefruit, thai basil and orange. These dry hopped IPAs are only available at the brewery- just another reason to visit.
To round out this tour, the last stop is Maritime Brewing Co. The largest and most established of the three, Maritime Brewing Co. has been a staple in Seattle’s craft brewing industry for over twenty years. Owner, George Hancock is an advocate of great beer and of Washington brewers. Just over a year ago, Maritime opened the doors to the new Jolly Roger Taproom and Brewpub.
At the Jolly Roger, beer drinkers can get a taste of all that Maritime has to offer from their regular line up to cask conditioned ales and seasonal favorites like the Jolly Roger Christmas Ale. Stop by and don’t forget to take a peak at the menu- try the onion rings and the mahi sliders!

Signs of life has emerged from the Seattle Beer Week website. You may all commence celebration because, its officially on its way!
Seattle Beer Week is in its 3rd year, and will span from May 19 – 28, 2011. SBW 2011 will return some of the old favorites. This year’s kickoff will be held at Maritime Pacific, where they will unveil the special strong ale that the brewery whipped up for SBW’s 3rd Annual brew. The closing event is still up in the air, but we suppose that it will be announced shortly.
While the past two years have yielded SBW double IPAs from Hales Ales and Pike Brewing, this year promises a Strong Ale brewed with rare Falconer hops. According to the site, “Falconer’s Flight™ Hops are an exclusive proprietary hop blend created to honor and support the legacy of Northwest brewing legend, Glen Hay Falcone.” Cannot wait for that grog.
Wondering whether Sour Beer Fest is back? Seriously?! Did you honestly think it could die? Sour Beer Fest at Brouwers Cafe will return on May 26, 2011. Again, its a Thursday. Also, expect to see old favorites 5 Guys, Burgers & Fries (Brouwers – renamed to Burgers & Beers no doubt because of that burger chain), Back in Black Stout Fest (Brouwers), and Firkin Firkin (Elysian Capitol Hill).

Sunday, November 29, 2009 marked Beer Blotter’s adventure to beer bars unknown and a brewery worth the trip. This trip refers to a 25 minute drive from downtown Seattle to Redmond, Washington. “What is there besides Microsoft in Redmond?” Well, that is why we are here, to stimulate your brain and your taste buds.
Stop #1 Black Raven Brewing Company
Known for their Trickster IPA (which won Beverage Place Pub‘s year round IPA tap spot), Black Raven Brewing Company’s brew pub is part of a commercial park. Inside, the space is warming and welcoming. We immediately walk up to the bar, order the sampler (and an extra Wisdom Seeker Double IPA) and take a seat at a wooden top table. Sunlight, well what Seattleites consider sunlight, streamed through the windows. The bartender and bar regulars were very passionate about beer and Black Raven. Beer blotter would like to thank Lee Killough for the pictures and insider facts about the brewery. Aside from the two IPAs, the Brown Porter and Second Sight Scotch Ale come highly recommended. The porter is surprising light for the style and is nutty with caramel undertones. This brew was an experimental recipe when the brewery first opened and they got it right the first time around!
Black Raven is located at 14687 NE 95th Street, Redmond, WA 98052. Beware: This brewery might have great brewing equipment (which you can sit near in the back room) but they do not serve food. Menus are placed at every table for delivery option to the brewery.
Stop #2 Malt and Vine Bottle Shop
After a great time at Black Raven, we decide to stick around Redmond for a little while longer. This provides us with a great opportunity to visit the local bottle shop, Malt and Vine. Like so many establishments in Redmond, Malt and Vine is located in a strip mall off of Redmond Way and my dear beer lovers, it is worth the stop in every way, shape and form. Not only does this bottle shop have approximately 15 taps flowing at any given time, (Lets take a moment for some name dropping: New Belgium Love, Lost Abbey Angel Share) their bottle selection is amazing and the refrigerators are organized by brewery, not by style. This approach to organizing your beer coolers, in our humble opinion, makes bottle shopping easier and that much more enjoyable. The only negative about this bottle shop is that the area in which one might enjoy one of these profound beers is not very welcoming and is reminiscent of a high school cafeteria. If only high school cafeterias sold rare beer and had an amazing tap list…the world would be a better place….or not… But during our time spent at Malt and Vine, the world did seem a bit better or at least bearable.
Malt and Vine is located at 16851 Redmond Way, Redmond, WA 98052. Less than 5 miles from Black Raven Brewery.
Stop #3 Wedgewood Ale House
We had heard such great things, had such high expectations. Maybe that was our problem. A cold November day, we were looking for a place to walk into, to warm our hearts and fill our souls. The only thing warm about the Wedgewood Ale House was the Boundary Bay Brewing Cabin Fever and Port Townsend Winter Ale on nitro. Although it was too cold and the wings were too small, Wedgewood Ale House has the quintessential bar menu and they support Washington breweries. With only Washington breweries on tap, the BB Cabin Fever is perfect for the winter/holiday season. It tantalizes your taste buds and tickles the back of your throat with hops and vanilla. The Port Townsend Winter Ale was inviting and spiced well with a malt balance.

Stop #4 Fiddler’s Inn
Fiddler’s Inn has a hidden rustic quality upon first sight with a comfortable, “home for the holidays” atmosphere inside. Stuffed from our previous stops, no food was ordered, but the menu boasted pizzas and what we would call Italian fare. But food isn’t really why were are hear as the tap list and wall mounted taps prove their passion for the punch. A taste of this so-called “punch” included New Belgium Wild Ale, Anchor Steam Christmas Ale and Fremont Brewing Co. Little Woody Pale Ale. A quick side note about New Belgium Wild Ale, it is brewed with schisandra berries. WAIT! Keep reading. This berry is known as the “5 flavored berry” presenting notes of sweet, sour, salty, spicy and bitter. This beer is all that rolled into one.

Stop #5 Pub at Pipers Creek
The space is awkwardly open and if you decide to take a seat that is not at the bar, your very far away from the only light that brightly shines. Taps form a crescent shape in the middle of the bar. At this point, food was the last thing on our minds, so we are sticking to what we know and love, beer. Big Al Brewing Winter Warmer had stout like qualities and was spicy, somewhat creamy and delicious. We were all pleasantly surprised by Elysian’s BiFrost which has an undeniable hop presence as well as Dick’s Brewing’s, Silk Lady.

While I plan on a 10 hour epic adventure through Brouwer’s Cafe’s 9th Annual Hard Liver Barleywine Festival, you can start to ponder which of these beers you will focus your attention upon. Oh but wait! There is no reason to worry about selecting 2 or 3 of these 10-18% beauties, Brouwers will be serving 3oz, 6oz and 12oz pours! Hooray for big beer.
So, take a gander and start planning. The festival begins on March 12th and runs through March 16th. Timperial will be here on the blog to give you the full preview early next week. If you have read his previews before, you know that its the best way to prepare for a beer festival.

I’m not beating around the bush – its beer time. With a full spectrum of excellent city beer festivals right around the corner, your liver best get ready. Here’s a short preview of what’s up.
San Fran is tapped out, but Sacto is just getting carbed.
San Francisco just killed the final keg of their beer week, which spanned through February 20. While the city dries out over the next few days, beer geeks have something else to celebrate – Sacramento Beer Week! That’s right, Sacto is tossing out its second go round of beer week fanatics with a whole eight days of beer craziness. The festival officially spans from February 25, 2011 – March 6, 2011.
Sacramento Beer Week kicks off with the Sacramento Brewers Showcase on February 24, 2011. From that point on, the event organizers have over 300 events planned. They will close out Beer Week over at The Capitol Beerfest, which will take place at Cal Expo on March 5. Fifty-nine breweries are expected to attend that event. Giddy up.
Do not forget two of the biggest brew experiences on earth – Philly Beer Week and Seattle Beer Week. These two events are certain to shock and awe the senses. Both are worth the flight, regardless of where you are. Luckily, we just so happen to be in both places while the events go down.
Seattle priming up for 3rd annual beer adventure.
Seattle Beer Week is in its 3rd year, and will span from May 19 – 28, 2011. This year, the event planners have hooked up with Maritime Pacific to craft the festival’s annual brew.
While the past two years have yielded double IPAs from Hales Ales and Pike Brewing, this year promises a Strong Ale brewed with rare Falconer hops. According to the site, “Falconer’s Flight™ Hops are an exclusive proprietary hop blend created to honor and support the legacy of Northwest brewing legend, Glen Hay Falcone.” Cannot wait for that grog.
The self-anointed original American beer week gets ready for #4
Philly Beer Week is in its 4th year, and will span from June 3 – 12, 2011. The founders of this event consider it to be the original city beer week and boast that it attracts more visitors than any other beer festival.
We know from experience that Philly Beer Week is one hell of an attraction. Over the past years, I have paid attention to the Twitter updates of festival goers with great jealousy. Hopefully this year, we will be joining the experience.
