Off To San Diego Beer Week, But What The Hell Is The Full Rack?
Airplane headed to San Diego – I love you. Get
me there quick and safe, for I have drinking to do.
The Beer Blotter squad is off to San Diego to enjoy a little San Diego Beer Week before it fizzles out (its ends on November 14th). We should get a few spots in – nothing crazy (completely psychotic).
The list of intended venues: Hamiltons Tavern, O’Brien’s Pub, the Linkery, Live Wire, Toronado, Ritual Tavern, Blind Lady Alehouse, Pizza Port Carlsbad, Pizza Port Bottle Shop, Alpine Beer Company, Stone Bistro & Brewery, Lost Abbey/Port Brewing, Alesmith Brewing, Ballast Point Brewing…….I mean, we’re not crazy or anything – just motivated.
So, expect to hear a little about San Diego and its amazing beer scene in the coming weeks. I cannot wait to get my hands on some Alpine Beer Co. IPA.
The Full Rack
But, what of last night? What is the full rack you ask (or you don’t but I’m telling you anyways)?
The full rack is a name we gave to the best beer experience ever at Uber Tavern. Uber recently decided to add 4 oz servings to their beer menu – an unbelievably amazing and genius concept.
Well, Uber has 17 taps. 17 taps + 4 oz servings = The Full Rack. Get it.
We had the ultimate in beer tasting last night. Our Full Rack included Southern Tier Oat, Echte Kreikenbier, Cascade Autumn Gose, Cascade RyePA, Deschutes Hop Trip and another 12 delicious beers.
There is no better way to enjoy a plethora of beer in one sitting. Visit Uber Tavern and thanks to Charlie for having us last night.
Events for Week of August 16, 2010
Highlights of beer for this weekend: 1/3 of Beer Blotter visited Walking Man Brewery (look for a 52 places article later this week) while I stayed in Seattle soaking in the 90 degree plus weather. I stopped at Fremont Brewing Co. on Saturday and enjoyed their Interurban IPA on cask dry hopped with Cascade hops and Mango. Damn good. But now for the week ahead.

Beer Weeks: San Diego Preview This Month; Philly’s Shebang Begins Friday
Well, I just so happen to be headed down to Southern California in 9 days (oh yeah!) and in my initial research of the scene, I stumbled upon some nice news that might be helpful for our California readers:
Did you know that San Diego Beer Week is doing a preview event June 10-13? Pretty awesome, I know.
San Diego Beer Week is a 10 day event that goes down from November 6-15, 2010. The event is widely regarded as one of the greatest beer celebrations across America. Like Seattle Beer Week, San Francisco Beer Week, and Philadelphia Beer Week (which begins this Friday, June 4!) the event not only celebrates the region’s brewers, but brewers across the country and globe.
Well, this year beer fans in San Diego decided that they could not wait until November and incorporated a 6 month San Diego Beer Week’Nd in to the schedule. Breweries like Ballast Point Brewing and pubs like Hamilton’s Tavern have already announced events spanning the whole weekend.
The events page is actually frighteningly empty at the current time. But, we would expect to see others like Lost Abbey, Stone Brewing, San Diego Brewing, Green Flash Brewing and Alesmith Brewing announce similar events.
You can follow the events listings for San Diego Beer Week’Nd at their webpage, or on Facebook and Twitter.
***DONT MISS: PHILLY BEER WEEK STARTS THIS WEEK***
We would be remiss to not mention that Philadelphia’s Beer Week begins this weekend.
The Philly Beer Week events page says that there are 1000 events at 195 venues. Thats intimidating. I hope that you East Coast beer lovers make it out to some of these events and report back.
One really cool feature for Philly Beer Week – they have an iPhone Application to follow the events. Download it here.
One recommended beer event? Zythos America on June 13, 2010. Wow, this is an abbreviated version of the epic Belgian Beer Fest that goes down every March. If you are in Philly, do not miss this chance to meet over a dozen of Belgium’s finest brewers.
World Beer Cup 2010: And the Winner is…
Here at Beer Blotter, we are very much aware that there are countless online sources for beer news, and that chances are high that if you read us, you probably read others. It is for this reason that we try to create something unique, and we often find it pointless to report on the biggest, most obvious news in beer. You will probably read those stories on beernews.org or something long before we could get around to posting it (since we all have day jobs to keep up with).
But…the World Beer Cup is, in our opinion, the only competition in the world of beer to rivals the Great American Beer Fest (GABF) for supremacy when it comes to that never-ending search for the world’s best beer in 90 style catagories, so here is the skinny, from your favorite botter-ers.
This year, 642 breweries from 44 countries and 47 U.S. states vied for awards with 3,351 beers entered in 90 beer style categories. In the fashion of the Olympics, the entries in each category were vying for gold, silver and bronze medals.
Now my question is, who were the judges and how can I become one? That sounds like the sweetest job on Earth, except for maybe if I was only assigned to style categories 1, 22, 34, 35, 38…you get the idea (if you look below). When PBR and In-Bev are raking in awards in the category, I don’t think the craft breweries are paying much attention to that style.
It is interesting though, on the topic of judges, that 62% of them came from outside the U.S. for this competition. Maybe we are in need of some talent here at home? Start exercising those pallets!
First, the Champion Brewery and Brewer Awards – I couldn’t find any details on how large the large brewery has to be to be considered for that award, but from what I’ve seen through the years, the winners in this category are normally very large, “macro” breweries. The other four awards are huge in the beer industry. Firestone Walker has now won the mid-sized brewery of the year award for the third time. That is a truly remarkable feat. You should not have a single ounce of regret spending your hard earned money on their beer. Everything that they make is good, and the world has recognized that. Many, many respects to the people at Firestone!

Now onto the individual awards – we have entered in the number of entrants to each category for you. It is interesting to note that Wood and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer had the most entrants (115 entrants, category 17), followed by Herb and Spice or Chocolate Beer (109 entrants, category 6). I wouldn’t have guest that, but it speaks to the intrepid nature of craft brewers in America and beyond. A true testament to why we all have such reverie for the great men and women that are a part of the craft beer movement.
It would be insane of us to not highlight the fact that Redmond, WA’s Black Raven Brewing took home three medals (two gold and one silver)! These guys are still very new and the fact that a local brewery is bringing home the bacon at such a prestigious competition makes us a bid prideful, and that doesn’t seem to happen as much as it should in Washington. It is also worth noting that two of their three medals were in the two largest categories mentioned above. Seattleites, get your ass to Redmond and congratulate them…right now!
