52 Weeks: The Publican, Chicago, IL

September 13, 2010 1 comment

The Meat District's Publican

Week 31 of 52

(we are going to get caught up this week. sorry for the delay)

The Publican

837 W. Fulton Market
Chicago, IL 60607

312-733-9555

Rank: 4.5/5

Type of Establishment: Gastropub, Pork orgy

Visit: To say “I have been meaning to visit The Publican” is a vast understatement. I feel deeply ashamed that it took me two months of Chicago residency to make it over there. Fate would have it that the must-attend art openings last evening were a mere 3 blocks away from this holy grail of Chicago beerdom.  As everyone knows, you can’t go to those things sober. The time was right.
Beers on Tap:

Green Flash West Coast I.P.A., Green Flash Brewing Co.

Moloko Milk Stout, Three Floyds Brewing Co.

Founders Dirty Bastard, Founders Brewing Company

The Czar, Avery Brewing Company

The place setting for a meal at the Publican.

New Holland Black Tulip Trippel Ale, New Holland Brewing Company

Long Thai Rainbow Rye, Half Acre Beer Company

Weihenstephaner Original, Brauerei Weihenstephan

Minx, Goose Island (this beer is mindblowing and well worth the $10+ dollars you will have to shell out for it. Find and imbibe at all costs)

Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Red Ale, Brouwerij Van Steenberge N.V.

Bluebird Bitter, Coniston Brewing Co, Ltd.

De Ranke XX Bitter, Brouwerij De Ranke

Ayinger Bräu Weisse, Privatbrauerei Franz Inselkammer KG

Bottles: Way too many to list. Full selection here, highlights include Founder’s Breakfast Stout, Victory Wild Devil, Dogfishhead Bitches Brew, Autumn Maple and 2 Turtle Doves from The Bruery, and all of the Goose Island, Jolly Pumpkin, New Holland and Two Brothers offerings.

Food Options: “Pork based” – need I say more? Having only partaken in their “afternoon snack” menu, I will limit my commentary to that, but I visually devoured their dinner menu as well as the drool-worthy plates parading by me.

Verdict: Sans the surly hosts, Publican gets a perfect score from For Whom The Beer Toales!

BAR OPINION:

Right off the bat: terrible impression by the host and hostess. They were visibly irritated by our party of six (for which there was more than ample room in the bar area) and rude to everyone in line, going so far as to snap at someone for taking a menu to look at! I expected a little more from a place with such a far-reaching reputation, especially at 5:30 on a Thursday.

The inside space.

Luckily our server Christine, who was as knowledgeable about the menu (food and beverage alike) as she was friendly and patient (my party had about a zillion questions, she showed no sign of annoyance or condescension), turned our frowns upside down.

The interior of the restaurant is beautifully executed. The main dining room is lined with stall-like tables (you are literally closed into them) that provide cozy privacy. There are more family-style dining tables with high backed chairs that provide large party seating throughout the rest of the room.

What really tickled me was the adorable “standing bar” area where we ended up. There is a small cluster of two-tiered round tables at bar height that are perfect for a post-work drink and some shared plates with friends. I really have a soft spot for the standing bar, so many places in Chicago will shuttle you into a formal dining setting (sit down table) and roll their eyes at you when you only want a beer and some fries.

In addition, The Publican has a wondrous assortment of purse hooks and shelves (built into the chair!) for all you heavy traveling lady drinkers to store your baggage. All this combined with an open kitchen and a deli-style meat slicer installed right at the end of the bar provide a great ambiance for enjoying The Publican’s knockout beer list and, in the words of Executive Chef Paul Kahan and Chef de Cuisine Brian Huston, “pristine product, simply prepared.”

I had a very hard time selecting which beers to order. My companion and I decided to share the New Holland Black Tulip Trippel Ale and Half Acre’s Long Thai Rainbow Rye (very reasonably priced at $5 each). The Black Tulip was smooth and sweet in all the right places, it coated my tongue with honey happiness. The Rainbow Rye was one of the best I have had of that style, and I have to hand it to Half Acre Beer Company. A bartender at Hopleaf tipped me off to this relatively new Chicago brewery. I’ve not had a bad beer from them yet, and their Daisy Cutter Pale Ale might be my #1 beer of Summer 2010.

Eggs and Frites

We also split the frites with fried eggs – do not sleep on this, people!! Frites are perfectly prepared, required no seasonings OR KETCHUP (and I love me a ketchup). The combination sounds weird but tastes so, so right.

My brief encounter left me wanting more. I went back today for a few more rounds and some beer banter with the lovely bartendress. Please excuse typos as I indulged in a Bluebird Bitter (perfect pairing for the Hannahs’s Bretzel with Bavarian mustard) and The Czar (coming in at an impressive 11.5%). Get there early or make a reservation because this place gets busy, and don’t forget to visit the bathroom (just trust me on that one).

World Beer Cup 2010: And the Winner is…

April 12, 2010 2 comments

The World Beer Cup showcases the world's best brewers - here are the champs at this year's event

Here at Beer Blotter, we are very much aware that there are countless online sources for beer news, and that chances are high that if you read us, you probably read others.  It is for this reason that we try to create something unique, and we often find it pointless to report on the biggest, most obvious news in beer.  You will probably read those stories on beernews.org or something long before we could get around to posting it (since we all have day jobs to keep up with).

But…the World Beer Cup is, in our opinion, the only competition in the world of beer to rivals the Great American Beer Fest (GABF) for supremacy when it comes to that never-ending search for the world’s best beer in 90 style catagories, so here is the skinny, from your favorite botter-ers.

This year, 642 breweries from 44 countries and 47 U.S. states vied for awards with 3,351 beers entered in 90 beer style categories.  In the fashion of the Olympics, the entries in each category were vying for gold, silver and bronze medals.

Now my question is, who were the judges and how can I become one?  That sounds like the sweetest job on Earth, except for maybe if I was only assigned to style categories 1, 22, 34, 35, 38…you get the idea (if you look below).  When PBR and In-Bev are raking in awards in the category, I don’t think the craft breweries are paying much attention to that style.

It is interesting though, on the topic of judges, that 62% of them came from outside the U.S. for this competition.  Maybe we are in need of some talent here at home?  Start exercising those pallets!

First, the Champion Brewery and Brewer Awards – I couldn’t find any details on how large the large brewery has to be to be considered for that award, but from what I’ve seen through the years, the winners in this category are normally very large, “macro” breweries.  The other four awards are huge in the beer industry.  Firestone Walker has now won the mid-sized brewery of the year award for the third time.  That is a truly remarkable feat.  You should not have a single ounce of regret spending your hard earned money on their beer.  Everything that they make is good, and the world has recognized that.  Many, many respects to the people at Firestone!

Now onto the individual awards – we have entered in the number of entrants to each category for you.  It is interesting to note that Wood and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer had the most entrants (115 entrants, category 17), followed by Herb and Spice or Chocolate Beer (109 entrants, category 6).  I wouldn’t have guest that, but it speaks to the intrepid nature of craft brewers in America and beyond.  A true testament to why we all have such reverie for the great men and women that are a part of the craft beer movement.

It would be insane of us to not highlight the fact that Redmond, WA’s Black Raven Brewing took home three medals (two gold and one silver)!  These guys are still very new and the fact that a local brewery is bringing home the bacon at such a prestigious competition makes us a bid prideful, and that doesn’t seem to happen as much as it should in Washington.  It is also worth noting that two of their three medals were in the two largest categories mentioned above.  Seattleites, get your ass to Redmond and congratulate them…right now!

The Tap List: 8 Cities. Lots of Bars. Beer on tap.

December 12, 2009 Leave a comment

Latona Pub in Seattle just posted their list. That Big Time brew is looking good!

So……Friday is the day where we will be introducing the Taplist – an adventure into America’s top tap lists. Beer Blotter did a survey (no we didnt), and we tallied the votes (certainly did not) and we decided in unanimity (eh…maybe) that there are 8 epic beer cities in the U.S. of A.

Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Seattle, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, and Denver won out. Thus, they will be routinely displayed here every Friday (morning from now on) so that you know where to go to get a beer in your city, your vacation spot, the place where work stuck you with that guy, the place you got stuck on a layover, the place your in-laws live and you tentatively visit,  and/or the place you bought that stuff from that dude that knew that chick.

We will try to get to all 8 cities each week…but this week we only get to 6.

And now for the list……

Chicago….

  • The Map RoomUpdated 12/11/09 – Founder’s Red Rye Ale is up and seriously lacking a response in the beer community. The reviews are spicy with a great caramel balance. Worth a look. Also, appearing are Cleveland’s Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald,  Montreal’s McAuslan St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout (99 on RateBeer), Sierra Nevada/Dogfish Life & Limb (10.2% with maple syrup and birch) – best for last Three Floyds Alpha Klaus (beer of the month = $4)
  • The PublicanGet the pig ears. order beer. Green’s Quest is brewed at Mikkeller’s De Proef Brouwerij (8.5% tripel); the list has Port Brewing’s Panzer Imperial Pilz and Older Viscosity (taste like hot pretzels – 2nd at Big Wood); you might want to save your cash and get a Matilda from Goose Island, a beer full of funky yet citrusy belgian flavor while adding a smooth but strong hoppy note.
  • The Hopleaf - Updated 12/11/09 – they win for today’s list. The list includes localites Tyranena Rocky’s Revenge (Barrel Aged Brown), Bell’s Two Hearted Ale (quintessential IPA), Two Brothers Heavy Handed IPA (wet hop!), Metropolitan Generator Dopplebock (who makes these? – 8.2% is just right), Half Acre Magnus Schwartz and Point Brewing Cascade Pale Ale. But the show stoppers here are (a) Stone/Brewdog Bashah (8.6%, get this – Black. Belgian. Double IPA – i love these guys) and (b) Goose Island Pere Jacques (9% – banana monster that will turn you upside down)

New York….

  • Ginger ManWeyerbacher Quad. enough said. This went up today. Also going up are Abita Christmas Ale (New Orleans favorite), and Smuttynose Big A IPA; but the king has to be Harpoon’s Leviathan Imperial IPA – we sampled this down in New Orleans and were floored. This is an extremely well bittered IPA with perfect smooth sugars. The beer is comparable to Ruination.
  • Rattle N Hum – Updated 12/9/09 – Woo. Wow. 40 taps and 4 Dark Star (England) Casks. This list is incredible – we will just rattle them off: Allagash Burnham Road, Smuttynose Finest Kind Kind (2x IPA – no ratings – rare as hell), Captain Lawrence Freshchester Pale, Dogfish Head Burton Baton (2x IPA), Stone Sublimely Self Righteous, Southern Tier Old Man Winter, Brooklyn Back Breaker, and Sixpoint Otis –  - but the champs are here Brooklyn Monster ’07 and Cigar City Hunaphu (got to love the NY and FL connection – thank NYC shitty taxes and FL no taxes) . Hunu is a RateBeer Top 50, aged in cigar box wood and severely limited in production. Get it now.

Philadelphia….

  • Monk’s CafeEast Coasters – they still have Port Brewing High Tide – go get it. Its your last amazing taste of fresh hops for the season. You want a Belgian – get the Nogne O Tiger Trippel.
  • EulogyAustria’s favorite is Samichlaus (14%) Dopplebock, aged for 10 months and ready for the Holidays. Very rare on tap. The Belgians here are the fare; there are plenty you will like.

San Diego…

San Francisco…

  • Toronado - These guys do not keep an updated taplist. But, they do have a pleasant surprise for you – Speakeasy is holding an Old Godfather Release Party today at this pub. This beer is a tasty caramel barleywine (10.2%). But the versions on tap today will be Barrel-Aged and extra special.
  • The TrappistOK OK we know its in Oakland, but this bar is incredible. They are hold KerstBier Festival right now, with some amazing Belgians. De Struise Tsjeeses (10%), Mikkeller To From, and Brouwerij De Regenboog‘s Catherine the Great Stout.

Seattle….

Let us know if we are missing something. Next week expect to see a post about all 8 cities!
