This Weekend In Oregon: Zwickelmania!
If there was ever a time to take a small road trip to our neighbor to the south, this weekend is it. The Oregon Brewer’s Guild’s Zwickelmania is going down on Saturday and it is a brilliant concept.
It’s basically an alignment of open houses for nearly every brewery in the state. Obviously, it would be impossible to visit all 90+ of them without a teleportation device, but it’s a perfect opportunity to visit one of the many areas of the state that have a condensed brewery population that you’ve never been to and brewery hop. Obviously, Portland and Bend would be ideal, but smaller, less visited hot spots like Ashland, Eugene, the coast, Mt. Hood, etc. could be really exciting.
The best part is that several areas have shuttle buses that will transport you from brewery to brewery. Drink all you want and don’t worry about having to drive. Dear, Washington Brewer’s Guild, lets do this in WA.
It’s rare that us beer nerds get such an opportunity to meet the people behind the art in a forum in which they are open and expectant to such a social interaction. If I didn’t work every Saturday I would absolutely be there.
2011 President’s Day weekend, dozens of Oregon breweries and brewpubs will open their doors to visitors for the state’s 3rd annual Zwickelmania. Zwickelmania, hosted by the Oregon Brewers Guild (OBG), is a free statewide event that offers visitors a chance to tour Oregon breweries, meet the brewers and sample their favorite beers.
When: Saturday, February 19th, 2011 from 11-4 pm
What: Oregon Brewers Guild Brewery Open House.
Incase you were wondering how this event got its name, a “zwickel” is the sample valve on a fermentor or bright tank. This allows you to sample a beer throughout its fermentation or carbonation and keep track of the progress.
